Students Create Sculpture of Shoes
in Campaign Against Cluster Munitions

St. Francis School “Students Against Landmines”/West Virginia Campaign to Ban Landmines began nine years ago as an art project to educate the public about a global issue. Students designed a sculpture of 500 painted shoes with facts about landmines attached.

The sculpture was placed in various community locations and eventually traveled to Washington, D.C. along with the students to raise awareness. We are working members of the West Virginia, United States and the International Campaign to Ban Landmines. Students Against Landmines and the West Virginia Campaign to Ban Landmines are committed to educating the public about the devastation caused by landmines, and recognize the indiscriminate nature of anti-personnel landmines leading to the destruction of innocent life, especially children, after wartime hostilities have ceased.

Students work on various projects throughout the year including: poster making, letter writing, petition drives, awareness days and presentations. The mission of the group is three-fold :

  1. To raise public awareness and educate others about landmines and cluster munitions.
  2. To raise awareness about victims issues.
  3. To encourage ALL countries to sign the treaties banning the production, use and stockpiling of these weapons.

St. Francis Students Against Landmines and the West Virginia Campaign to Ban Landmines have been represented at conferences in Bosnia, Kenya, Croatia and Jordan. In the past, students have collected medical supplies for landmine victims in Nicaragua, provided a prosthetic device for a young Bosnian landmine victim, raised funds to train mine detection dogs and are now working with “Landmines Blow!” to provide funds for two water wells in mined areas of Cambodia. Students Against Landmines/West Virginia Campaign to Ban Landmines have recently expanded our mission to include advocacy toward a prohibition on the use, production, and transfer of cluster munitions that cause unacceptable harm to civilians.

We are working with Andres Martinez Garcia of CIREC/The Centro Integral de Rehabilitacion de Colombia). I met Andres in Jordan. The aim of our project is to raise awareness about landmines in Colombia. Colombia is a country greatly affected by landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW). We are concerned about the alarming rate of landmine injuries and fatalities. Students are devoting the months of March and April to raising public awareness about landmines and cluster bombs. Students will be making presentations at local/state civic organizations and, in May, at the Pope John Paul Cultural Center in Washington, D.C. Our sculpture will travel to various locations for public showings.
