The Uncertain Election: Defending Constitutional Democracy and Human Survival

In the run up to the U.S. election, Daniel Ellsberg, the courageous whistleblower who risked 115 years in prison in the early 1970s for revealing the Pentagon’s secret history of the Vietnam War in his effort to stop the killing, wrote that the country was “facing an authoritarian threat to our democratic system of a kind we’ve never seen before.” Despite differing with Biden on many issues, he urged people to vote for Biden  “to free the nation from Trump’s unhinged and destructive grip” – not least because four more years of Trump racism and maximizing the use of fossil fuels would be calamitous. “World civilization”, he wrote, “cannot afford another four years of Trump’s presidency.

IPB Statement on Jeremy Corbyn, 2017 Seán MacBride Peace Prize Winner

The International Peace Bureau recognises Jeremy Corbyn as a lifelong campaigner against racism, against war and for a peaceful and tolerant world. In 2017 IPB awarded him the Seán MacBride Peace Prize for his ‘sustained and powerful political work for disarmament and peace’ and his record shows that he has also championed the oppressed, the poor and the disadvantaged.

The IPB is united in its opposition to anti-Semitism and racism in all its forms. We remain united for a world free from fear.

We will continue to work with Jeremy and with all who strive for peace and justice.

The Promise of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW)  has received the last ratifications needed to put the Treaty into force. With the milestone of 50 ratifications having been achieved, the next critical step will be winning the signing and ratification by one or more of the nuclear weapons umbrella states, a European NATO member or one of the newly christened, “quad”, envisioned as an Asia-Pacific NATO: Japan, Australia and India. The International Peace Bureau celebrates the historical step of the 50th ratification of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear weapons, supported by over 120 states at the UN in July 2017.

After 3 years of debates, pressures, and mobilisation, 50 countries have today finalised the ratification of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). The International Peace Bureau, 1910 Nobel Peace Laureate, welcomes the Nobel Committee’s decision to award the World Food Programme the 2020 prize. The WFP has played an essential role in addressing food shortages and hunger in conflict zones around the world in a time when the severity of such crises are growing – from the effects of climate change to the use of hunger as a tool of war, food security remains a persistent and dangerous global issue.

The 4th International Congress against Military Bases and Wars was held on 25 September 2020 as a hybrid online-offline event due to the Covid-19 pandemic. More than 20 people were present in Berlin and more than 70 online to discuss the current state of military bases around the world and what actions must be taken to combat the growing trends of militarism, confrontation, environmental degradation, and more.

A short history of the International Peace Bureau: 1990 – 2017*

The end of the Cold War ushered in a particularly complex decade. Loss of peace movement momentum due to the end of East-West confrontations and the immediate nuclear threat was accompanied by a diversification of focus. Human rights, social development, gender, environment and other causes all absorbed activist energies and favoured new coalitions and political formations. These issues were highlighted by a remarkable series of major UN Summits, culminating in the Millennium Declaration and ultimately the Sustainable Development Goals (2015).
