Joseph Gerson is President of the Campaign for Peace, Disarmament and Common Security, Director of the American Friends Service Committee’s Peace & Economic Security Program and Co-Convener of the international Peace and Planet Network.
He organizes and educates at local, national and international levels for peaceful and just alternatives to U.S. foreign and military policies, concentrating on great power tensions, nuclear weapons abolition, diplomatic resolution of U.S.-Iran and U.S.-Korea tensions, the impacts of U.S. foreign military bases, and Pentagon spending. He serves as Vice-President of the International Peace Bureau and is a member of the No to NATO/No to War steering committee. He led international movement mobilizations for the 2010 and 2015 Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty Review Conferences and is currently leading the organizing for the April 2 NATO Counter-Summit conference in Washington, D.C. and the May 4 New Thinking & Movement Building conference in New York during the NPT Prep. Com. He works closely with Gensuikyo, the Japan Council against A- & H- Bombs and will be speaking during their Bikini H-Bomb commemorations in Shizuoka in late February and early March.
His books include Empire and the Bomb: How the US Uses Nuclear Weapons to Dominate the World, The Sun Never Sets…Confronting the Network of U.S. Foreign Military Bases, and With Hiroshima Eyes: Atomic War, Nuclear Extortion and Moral Imagination. His articles have appeared in The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, the Boston Globe, Christian Century, Common Dreams, Truthout and other publications.
